Dear voters of Essex County:
Allow me to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Marilynn English, and I am not a politician. I feel we are at an important cross-road in our County, especially with regard to our severe financial situation. I am a candidate for Essex County Freeholder- at- large.
My professional background includes experience and skills that are particularly well-suited to addressing our County's financial challenges. I was an Assistant Vice President at JP Morgan in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department. My responsibilities included budgets, human resources, auditing and compliance. After leaving JP Morgan, I joined the mortgage banking industry, and I currently have my own company, English Financial LLC. I have helped many people just like you over the years, and consider myself to be one of the "good guys" in this industry. My experience has resulted in many opportunities to speak to the problems in the system, such as a newspaper article entitled "Buyer Beware," and a panelist on "Real Talk" on the subject of predatory lending.
I was born in Jersey City, NJ and currently own a home in Verona. I am a current member of the Verona Rent Control Board and a former member of the Budget Review Committee. My extensive volunteer efforts include work with One-to-One telethons with Geraldo Rivera, the Willowbrook Developmental Center, Christmas is for children, The Jimmy Fund, Muscular Dystrophy and Easter Seals. I understand the urgent needs within our community through participation in feeding Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to the homeless, and rescuing abandoned animals and placing them in loving homes. Due to a family tragedy, the death of my sister in 2000, I've spent years navigating the Justice System, and learning its complexities and shortcomings.
I understand how frustrating it is to you and your neighbors, seeing continued deterioration of core services in spite of seemingly endless increases in taxes. As an example of how I started to become aware of our County's situation, in September 2008, I first began investigating the money spent on the deer hunt in South Mountain Reservation, and subsequent hunts in Eagle Rock and Hilltop Reservations. We've been told incorrectly that these hunts did not cost the taxpayers anything. I have obtained hundreds of records via the Open Public Records Act, and found that money could have been saved by spaying/neutering and/or inoculating these animals. The County Executive has spent millions of our tax dollars buying properties at above appraisal value, plantings in "wild" areas, a miniature golf course, outsourcing services in spite of having County employees available for the work, and other activities of dubious value.
Through a group of people, the very large group whom I have met over the past 3 years, I have become more determined than ever to get the message out there that we can make Essex County the great place it should be, that our voices can be heard, and that we can make a difference. I am running for this position for the people I have come to know, the very good real people many of whom are not voting because they are disgusted and believe that nothing will change. How can I help bring this change? I don't know the specifics yet, but I do know we can do more with less. I don't need my picture on every piece of paper coming out the County. I don't need a County driver. I am very capable of driving myself. I think the County should do a lot more to help people in financial distress. I would rather see short term loans to the struggling homeowners than money spent on plants, County cars for certain employees and other unnecessary programs.
Running for Essex County Freeholder -at- large is the right thing for me to do at this juncture. We need help, and I believe I can provide what we need.
